China, Russia, and India lead the way in the number of universities included in the 2025 BRICS University Rankings.
China ranks first in the number of universities in the BRICS University Rankings, with 216 institutions (29% of the total number of universities in the ranking). Russia ranks second with 169 universities (approximately 23%). India rounds out the top three with 97 universities in the ranking (approximately 13%).
Brazil, with 56 universities (7%), and Iran, with 28 universities (approximately 4%), also rank in the top five. The remaining 24% of universities in the ranking came from countries such as Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Kazakhstan, Indonesia, Thailand, Belarus, South Africa, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and others.
According to the Russian Ministry of Education and Science as of March 2025, more than 395,000 international students are studying in Russia. The highest demand for Russian education comes from citizens of Kazakhstan (55,500), Turkmenistan (53,300), China (51,200), Uzbekistan (47,500), and India (30,300).
Students from BRICS countries pay attention to rankings when choosing universities. Many Chinese students are focused on obtaining an education that will ensure a high income after graduation. Based on this indicator, the attractiveness of education in Russia could be rising. Youth unemployment in China remains at a high level; even graduates from highly ranked Chinese universities sometimes cannot find good jobs and are forced to accept low salaries. On contrary, the demand for young professionals is very high in Russia, especially from highly ranked Russian universities.
